Dear young marketers
The year is 2011 and Rohit Srivastav has been reaping karma points on Quora, Reddit, and Facebook. On the former two by leaving helpful answers and on the latter by, well, running a meme page.
Little did he know that his love for writing and satire would lead to encounters with pioneers in Indian SaaS (Software as a Service) and would eventually lead him to marketing.
Today, Rohit runs a newsletter—Figuring it out—where he shares lessons that he wished he knew as a young marketer.
He also moonlights as a poet, screenwriter, and an A+ human being.
That, apart from making Twitter and LinkedIn a much better place with his humour.
This episode on the Newsletter Nerd Show is about mental frameworks, not taking yourself too seriously, navigating roles, and everything you wish you knew as a young marketer!

The Reading Room is that part of the show where the guest reads out an excerpt from their newsletter.
And Rohit chose to address the modern version of the chicken-egg problem: Who should be your first marketing hire?
He shared a really simple way to look at this by considering the nature of your product or service.

This is hands down my most favourite segment of the show. And from what I’ve seen, it’s the same for the guests and listeners alike!
Now, this is a segment you’ve GOT to check out the audio version of (aka simply hit that play button)
The rules of Have You Ever are simple - I ask the guest a couple of questions, and they respond with a yes or no.
Head to 38:01 in the episode to check out how Rohit faced the questions thrown at him
But for whatever reason, if you choose to continue just reading, I made a visual summary for you.
As you read each question, wait for the accompanying llama to reveal its true colour.
A green llama means a YES and a red llama means a NO.
With that, it’s a wrap.
Don’t forget to say hi to Rohit here and check out his newsletter here!
On a more personal note, I made another trip around the Sun early this month.
If you'd told me a year ago I'd get to talk to all the newsletter creators I loved, I'd have smacked your head and called you crazy.
And if you'd told me those very people would come together and send something like the video you're going to see below, I'd have cried ugly tears right there.
Shout out to Roop Lukka for the incredibly thoughtful gesture!
And to every single one of you who came together for the occasion. I'm going to be holding this very dear to my heart for a long long time <3
Oh, and one last thing before you leave. The amazing Abhijeet Kumar (or Lazy Writer as he's better known), summarised his takeaways from episode #11 ft. Jay Acunzo on the Newsletter Nerd Show. Check it out here.
Until next time,
Akshaya
