What would be your response if you ever got one of those bitcoin pitches on LinkedIn?
Mine would be to laugh it off and carry on with my day.
But for a notorious copywriter who grew up in Liverpool, it would be to make up an island where time stands still or divulge his addiction to illegal hedgehog betting.
Dave Harland has always been a messabouter™ (his words, not mine). From doing impressions of teachers in school to always leaving his nan’s house through the window, his messabouting has shaped who he is today.
But I don’t blame him.
If my family’s way of expressing love meant taking a humorous dig at each other in a friendly way, I would’ve turned out the same.
When Dave joined me on the Newsletter Nerd Show, he upheld the honour of the Harland clan by leaving me in stitches!
We talk about made-up words, exploding faces, catching people in awkward situations, copywriting, humour being a connector instead of a disruptor, and a whole lot more in this one.

Talking about episodes, The Newsletter Nerd Show now has a new house! A no-nonsense page where you can find all the previous episodes and read some nice things people have said about the show.
Head here to check it out.
The Reading Room is that part of the show where I finally shut up for good and let the guest take it all away. Loosely translated, this is where each of them pick a favourite edition of their newsletter and read it out for us.
In this episode, Dave chose to read the one about grimacing elephants and the power of unedited drafts. And dear reader, believe me when I say he kept me on my toes the whole time!
You can check out Dave’s reading by heading to 27:39 in the episode.
When my brother and I were growing up, we constantly got into trouble for messing around and pulling pranks on each other. That’s what kids are supposed to do, right? Right.
But turns out, not everybody thought so.
And by everybody, I mean my mom.
With her, there were no grey areas. If she caught wind of either of us pulling pranks, we had only two choices: accept it right away and prepare ourselves for the Great Disaster or deny it like our lives depended on it until she’s convinced.
I like to think that if my mom were a party game, she’d be the game of Have You Ever. Here, you either answer with a Yes or a No. There was no room for Maybe.
This part of the show is a tribute to my mom and is the one where I ask the guest four questions related to their newsletters. All they have to do—you guessed it—is answer with a Yes or a No.
You can check out this segment on the podcast by heading to 34:34 or by scrolling down to the visual below.
If the llama accompanying the question turns red, it means Dave’s answer was No. And if it turns green, his answer was Yes.
With that fitting tribute, we’ve reached the end of this episode.
If you’re still not convinced to check out Dave’s newsletter and tell him hi by heading here, I have one question - why?
Until next time,
Akshaya
